EPOXY MOLDMAKING

STEP-BY-STEP

STEP 1: Fabricate your model.

STEP 2: Roll out clay. Must be larger than size of master mold and thick enough to embed model up to its centerline.

STEP 3: Make impression in clay using master mold frame

STEP 4: Embed model in clay. Adjust to  depth to create desired parting line location.

STEP 5: Embed a dowel to create a pathway for the plastic to enter the cavity.

STEP 6: Reposition mold frame over clay. Heat clay until it's hard.

STEP 7: Cover screw holes and frame inserts with clear tape to protect from epoxy. Apply mold release to all exposed surfaces. Pour epoxy in cavity, filling it up.

STEP 8: Spray mold release on a piece of plexiglass. Set plexiglass on top of the filled cavity.

STEP 9: After epoxy cures, remove plexiglass. Flip over mold and remove clay. Clean off residue. Apply mold release to all exposed surfaces. Attach mold backing plate to mold frame

STEP 10: Cover screw holes and inserts of other frame half with clear tape. Apply mold release to all exposed surfaces. Position frame halves together as shown. Secure with bolts.

(TIP: Slide other mold backing plate under the mold so it doesn't wobble on the bolt heads)

STEP 11: Pour epoxy in cavity, filling it up.

STEP 12: Spray mold release on a piece of plexiglass. Set plexiglass on top of the filled cavity.

STEP 13: After epoxy cures, remove plexiglass and disassemble mold frames. Separate epoxy molds from each other and remove model and dowel from cavity. Clean residue off master frames and epoxy molds.

STEP 14: Reassemble mold frames to their backing plates. Insert epoxy molds back into frame cavities. Add air vents in epoxy by lightly filing down desired areas. Spray mold release into epoxy cavities.
